Dagestan Tur Hunting in Russia

An Elite Mountain Hunting Experience
The Dagestan Tur hunt is the ultimate test. This is a physically demanding, high-altitude expedition conducted in the rugged, vertical terrain of the Caucasus Mountains. Our exclusive territories consistently produce large, mature males, a testament to our quality management. Due to its unique characteristics, the Tur is recognized by both SCI and GSCO for the Ovis and Capra World Slams, making it a doubly prestigious prize.

Hunting Method & Trophy Philosophy
This is a pure spot-and-stalk challenge. We utilize horses for access, but the final approach is always on foot in steep, broken terrain. Hunters must be in excellent physical condition and prepared for shots from 200 to 300 meters, often at difficult angles. Our primary goal is to ensure every hunter who puts in the effort secures a representative trophy that reflects the grandeur of these mountains.

Accommodations & Logistics
Lodging is varied to suit the hunt’s logistics, ranging from local guides’ houses and comfortable area hotels to remote fly camps. In these fly camps, a high-quality sleeping bag is essential. The base camps are typically located at 1200-1600 meters and offer good beds, heating, and hearty homemade meals.

Dagestan Tur Hunt FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Dagestan Tur Hunt

Q: What makes the Dagestan Tur trophy so prestigious? +

A: The Dagestan Tur is unique among mountain game. Due to its distinct characteristics, major hunting organizations like Safari Club International (SCI) and Grand Slam Club/Ovis (GSCO) recognize the Tur for both the Ovis World Slam (world’s sheep) and the Capra World Slam (world’s goats). Furthermore, it is a key species for achieving GSCO’s most prestigious mountain hunting award, the Culminum Magister. Earning a Tur trophy means getting credit in multiple elite award programs, making it an exceptionally coveted prize.

Q: How physically demanding is this hunt really? +

A: This is one of the most physically challenging mountain hunts in the world. Success is directly tied to your physical condition. You must be prepared for daily strenuous hiking in extremely steep, rocky, and vertical terrain at high altitudes. We strongly recommend a dedicated fitness regimen focusing on cardiovascular endurance and leg strength for at least six months prior to the expedition.

Q: What is the best rifle and caliber for this hunt? +

A: A flat-shooting magnum caliber is highly recommended. Cartridges like the .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 Weatherby Magnum, or 7mm Remington Magnum are excellent choices. More important than the specific caliber is your familiarity with your rifle system. You must be confident in making precise shots at distances between 200 and 300 meters, often from awkward angles. A high-quality scope with a reliable turret system is essential.

Q: Can I legally bring my own rifle into Russia? +

A: Yes, absolutely. We manage the entire temporary firearm import permit process for you to ensure your travel is fully legal and seamless. We strongly advise against working with any outfitter who suggests you cannot bring your own firearm, as this can be a red flag for an illegal operation.

Q: What kind of weather should I expect in the Caucasus? +

A: The weather in the Caucasus Mountains is unpredictable and can change rapidly. During the main season (August-November), you can experience everything from warm, sunny days to cold winds, rain, fog, and even snow at higher elevations. A high-quality layering system, including waterproof and windproof outer layers, is critical.

Q: What is the travel logistics like? +

A: Travel is very convenient. Most of our clients fly to Mineralnye Vody Airport (MRV) via a direct connection from Istanbul, Turkey. This avoids the need for an additional transfer in Moscow. Upon arrival, our team will meet you and handle all ground transportation to the hunting area, which is typically a 3-4 hour drive.
