What Is the Dagestan Tur?

Eastern Caucasian Tur (Capra cylindricornis) trophy harvested in Dagestan, Russia — Capra World Slam SCI Dagestan Tur

The Dagestan Tur (Eastern Caucasian Tur, Capra cylindricornis) is one of the most coveted mountain trophies in the world. For members of Safari Club International, it is a required entry for both the Capra World Slam and the Ovis World Slam.

Its unique morphology — combining features of ibex and wild sheep — makes it an exclusive and irreplaceable trophy for serious big-game hunters worldwide.

We offer access to the two most productive hunting zones in the Caucasus for this species:

Republic of Dagestan

The region with the highest population density of Eastern Tur and record-class horn dimensions. Classic high-mountain hunting, demanding terrain, and outstanding results. The preferred option for hunters with prior high-altitude mountain experience.

Kabardino-Balkaria

Exclusive concessions with very limited state-issued licenses. Minimal hunting pressure. Animals behave more calmly and expose themselves more frequently in open terrain. A more predictable and physically balanced expedition without sacrificing trophy quality.

Duration: 7 days total (5 effective hunting days + 2 logistics days)
Difficulty: High — high altitude, shots from 220 to 380 yards on steep hillside angles
Transportation: Caucasian mountain horses trained for the most remote terrain

Hunting Seasons & Monthly Tactics

August — Mid September

Summer Peak Season

Turs group at maximum elevation escaping the heat. Large bulls visible together, but frequent fog can limit visibility. Temperature: 59–72°F daytime · 41°F at night. Tactic: Fly Camps on ridgelines to begin glassing at dawn.

Mid September — October

Best Season for Comfort & Results

Optimal visibility. Large herds easy to locate. Recommended for the best balance of performance and physical demand. Temperature: 46–59°F daytime · down to 23°F at night.

November — The Rut

Peak Rut — Maximum Trophy Potential

Bulls drop to lower elevations and lose caution. High probability of snow, but maximum odds for a record-class bull. Temperature: 41°F daytime · 14–23°F at night.

Logistics & Firearm Transport

We understand that international firearm transport is the hunter's main concern. We offer two proven options:

Option A

Your Own Rifle

Transit through Moscow. Our representative meets you at the airport, handles customs and the temporary import permit. Full legal support throughout the process.

Republic of Dagestan vs. Kabardino-Balkaria

Republic of Dagestan Kabardino-Balkaria
Hunting pressure Baja Very low
Special zone
Animal behavior More alert and wary More relaxed, frequently exposed in open terrain
Predictability Media-alta Alta
Physical difficulty Very high Moderate
Distance from airport 4–7 hrs from Makhachkala 2.5 hrs from Nalchik
If this is your first Caucasus hunt, we recommend starting with the Mid-Caucasian Tur or the Kuban Tur — more streamlined logistics and a more balanced physical challenge. Within the Dagestan Tur, Kabardino-Balkaria is the most predictable option. If you're after the maximum challenge and the largest horns, the Republic of Dagestan is the choice for hunters with prior Caucasus experience.

Yes. This option requires transit through Moscow, where our representative handles customs and the temporary import permit. We also offer the VIP Route: direct flight to the Caucasus and premium rifles already zeroed for the specific conditions of the region. You start hunting one day earlier.

Shots typically range from 220 to 380 yards on steep hillside angles. August: groups of 4–10 bulls together at high elevation, good odds for large trophies — but frequent fog can make hunting difficult.

Mid-September – October: best balance of physical conditions and glassing. Stable weather, optimal visibility. First choice for most hunters.

November — the rut: highest odds for a record-class trophy. Bulls are less wary and more visible. Harsh conditions: possible snow, intense cold. Best suited for hunters with prior high-mountain experience.

Yes. The Eastern Caucasian Tur (Capra cylindricornis) is not listed in CITES Appendix I. Import is permitted in the United States and the European Union. Our package includes full management of CITES permits and all required veterinary documentation. We coordinate directly with export agents to ensure a fully transparent process.

You must be able to walk 4–6 hours daily in high-mountain terrain at 8,200–11,500 ft elevation, carry an 18–26 lb pack, and make accurate shots after physical exertion. Caucasian horses cover most of the distance — the final foot stalk typically lasts 30 to 90 minutes.

In many cases yes. We have successfully guided hunters with excess weight, mobility limitations, controlled cardiac conditions, and older hunters. We adapt the route, pace, and camp locations to each hunter's capabilities. Tell us your situation before booking and we'll give you an honest assessment.

Yes. The Dagestan Tur combines perfectly with the Mid-Caucasian Tur and the Kuban Tur in a single trip to complete the Caucasus Capra World Slam. Contact us and we'll build the itinerary around your schedule.

We guarantee at least one genuine shooting opportunity. If it doesn't happen due to weather, we offer extended hunt days or a return hunt at a future date paying only room and board costs. If the hunter chooses not to return: 35% refund of the package price.

"On my first trip I couldn't hunt due to weather — we were stuck in camp for 5 days. Real Hunt offered me a return at no extra cost. I came back 3 weeks later and harvested the tur on day one. Great service, fully transparent, and they kept their word."

Augusto Palamar · Argentina · 2024

"Outstanding organization. We hunted 3 turs in the same trip and practically in the same area. The guides' work, the territory preparation, and Real Hunt's management speak for themselves. I'll definitely be back."

Jorge Madrazo · Spain · 2025
★★★★★

"I've done three mountain hunts, but the Dagestan Tur was the most demanding — and the most rewarding. The guide knew every slope. On day four, shot at 310 meters on an uphill angle. Perfect organization from start to finish."
