What Is the Yakutia Snow Sheep?

Yakutia Snow Sheep (Ovis nivicola lydekkeri) trophy — Sette-Daban mountains, Siberia — Real Hunt Me Ovis nivicola lydekkeri

The Yakutia Snow Sheep (Ovis nivicola lydekkeri) is one of the most coveted and prestigious trophies in the world of mountain hunting. For members of Safari Club International, it is a mandatory entry to achieve the distinguished Ovis World Slam award.

Our hunting grounds in Yakutia, Siberia — located in the Sette-Daban mountains and north of Khandyga (bordering the Okhotsk region) — represent a private exclusive territory of 632,000 hectares. No other hunters. No shared camps.

Trophy horn size in our concession ranges from 75 to 90 cm, with outstanding populations of mature rams.

Duration: 14 days total (10 effective hunting days + 2 logistics days + arrival/departure)
Difficulty: High — altitudes 600–1,100 m, shooting distances 300–500 m, demanding terrain
Method: Spot & Stalk on horseback approach; all final stalks on foot

Season & Hunting Tactics by Month

The date you choose directly impacts physical demands and hunting strategy. Our key tactic: advance scout teams move into the grounds before you arrive, locate trophy rams, and maintain continuous surveillance. You arrive to an already-located and tracked animal.

August — Peak Season

Optimal Conditions

Temperature: +18°C (64°F) daytime / +5°C (41°F) at night. Stable weather, long daylight hours.

Rams in bachelor groups on sunny slopes. Prior reconnaissance means you head directly to specific groups. The most popular and recommended window for most hunters.

September — Advanced Window

Maximum Visibility Before Winter

Temperature: +10°C (50°F) daytime / −10°C (14°F) at night. First snow possible.

Rams begin descending to lower elevations. We continue monitoring group movements for a successful horse approach. Demanding conditions — suitable for experienced mountain hunters.

Logistics, Weapons & Camp

Hunting in Yakutia demands impeccable organization. We have two proven solutions for your rifle:

Option A

Your Own Rifle

Requires mandatory transit through Moscow. Our representative meets you at the airport, handles customs, and manages the temporary import permit. Full legal support at every stage.

Camp Infrastructure

Accommodation is organized in wooden log cabins at the base camp, large heated tents, or specially prepared high-comfort vehicles. Satellite communication is always available. Fly Camps (lightweight) may be used for 1–2 days maximum when necessary to close distance on a specific ram.

Transport to camp: Regional flight or 12-hour 4WD transfer from Yakutsk, followed by Yakutian horse transfer to base camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The entire process is handled 100% online and our team manages everything — official invitation letter, step-by-step instructions, and follow-up until approval. Included in the package price. Processing typically takes 10 to 15 business days.

Yes, but it requires mandatory transit through Moscow. Our representative handles customs and the temporary import permit. We also offer Option B — Premium Rifle Rental: fly direct to Yakutsk with no Moscow stopover, and hunt with pre-zeroed Blaser or Sako rifles already on site.

Shots typically range from 300 to 500 meters across open ridgelines — longer ranges than most mountain hunts. We recommend the .300 Win Mag (best balance of flat trajectory and energy), the .338 Lapua Magnum for maximum confidence at 450+ meters, or the 7mm Rem Mag for hunters who prefer lighter recoil. An angle-compensating rangefinder is strongly recommended.

August: Peak season. Stable weather, long daylight, rams in bachelor groups on open slopes. Recommended for most hunters.

September: Maximum visibility before winter. Colder temperatures (−10°C at night), possible early snow. Rams begin descending. More demanding conditions — best suited for hunters with prior mountain hunting experience.

Yes. Ovis nivicola is not listed in CITES Appendix I. Import is permitted in both the United States and the European Union. We manage all required veterinary certificates and export documentation from the Russian side, coordinating directly with export agents for full transparency.

This hunt is rated High difficulty. Daily stalks of 4–8 hours at altitudes of 600–1,100 meters, carrying a pack of 8–12 kg. Shots from 300–500 meters after physical exertion. Yakutian horses cover most of the approach — the final stalk to the ram is always on foot. We recommend cardiovascular training in the months prior to the expedition.

In many cases yes. We have successfully guided hunters with excess weight, mobility limitations, and specific health conditions. We adapt the route, pace, and camp placement to your capabilities. Tell us your situation before booking and we'll give you an honest assessment.

Yes. Many of our clients combine the Yakutia Snow Sheep with the Dagestan Tur, Mid-Caucasian Tur, or Kuban Tur in the same trip to advance their Ovis World Slam and Capra World Slam. Contact us and we'll build the itinerary around your schedule.

We guarantee at least one genuine shooting opportunity. If conditions prevent it due to weather, we offer extended hunt days or a return hunt at a future date paying only accommodation and meals. If the hunter chooses not to return: 35% refund of the tour price.

"I've hunted sheep on three continents and this was the most organized expedition I've ever been on. We arrived and the guides already had the ram located. Shot on day four at 380 meters. Extraordinary territory management."
